Liam Gillick

Liam Gillick

Gillick has established a reputation for his interest in the grey areas where architecture, design and art intersect. For Great Portland Street, Gillick produced a series of related posters featuring simple typography, strong pattern and single colours. The work made use of transcripts from non-specific television advertising – placing the structure of one communication medium into another. The structure of the message overwhelms the product and we are left to reflect on the potential of narrative and presentation.

Liam Gillick (born 1964) is an artist who lives and works in London and New York. Exhibitions include: documenta X, 1997; ‘What If’, Moderna Museet, 2000; ‘The Wood Way’, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 2002; 50th Venice Biennale, 2003; ‘Exterior Days’, Casey Kaplan, New York, 2003 and ‘Communes, bars and greenrooms’, Powerplant, Toronto, 2003. Books include Erasmus is Late, (Book Works, London 1995); Discussion Island/Big Conference Centre (Derry/Ludwigsburg, 1997) and Five or Six (Lukas & Sternberg, New York, 1999). Gillick has also been teaching at Columbia University, New York, since 1997.
