The Artists Cinema in collaboration with LUX

The Artists Cinema was a collaboration to construct, programme and run a cinema for artists’ film and video within Frieze Art Fair. First realized at the fair in 2005, The Artists Cinema programme focuses on recent works and this year premieres the first co-commissions by Frieze Projects/LUX. Five artists — Manon de Boer, Miguel Calderón, Bonnie Camplin, Phil Collins and Apichatpong Weerasethakul — were commissioned to make short 35mm films that comment on, interrupt or reflect the cinematic context. The films will tour to UK cinemas, shown before main features, through the Independent Cinema Office.

The Frieze Projects/LUX film commissions were screened daily alongside an invited programme selected by artists and curators: Stuart Comer, Sharon Lockhart, the Otolith Group, Cristina Ricupero, Christine Tohme and Maria-Christina Villaseñor.

Events included performances by artists k2 Aufbau Organisation (featuring k2ao & Stephan Dillemuth) and Lindsay Ljungkull, special projects with Yoko Ono and Sharon Hayes and expanded cinema works by Gill Eatherley and Malcolm Le Grice (curated by Mark Webber) celebrating 40 years of the London Film Makers Co-op. The Artists Cinema is co-ordinated by Ian White.
